For the record…..
Election Day is almost upon us and I have had a number of calls and emails to confirm my position on important issues such as growth, our seniors, our youth and helping local businesses. So, for the record, I’ve addressed these briefly below, beginning with the biggest single factor in my decision to seek the Bolton Regional Councillor seat…which is growth.
About growth…..
My husband and I moved to Bolton 20 years ago, from Brampton, because we wanted a smaller quieter town. We have grown considerably since then and I firmly believe we should stick to our Official Plan’s population forecasts, in terms of both numbers and time frames, as opposed to opening up the doors to rapid development. I will advocate for managed even growth, and sustainable planning, that meets our community and environmental values.
About seniors….
I will work hard for better services for seniors such as accessible flex-design housing. A small shuttle bus system within the town of Bolton would help seniors get around town to shopping, events and appointments; this type of transit would benefit our stay-at-home moms and youth as well. Now, more than ever, we need to work to increase AND enhance services and support for seniors.
About youth….
While we can engage our youth with improved indoor and outdoor sports facilities we have to remember there are other productive activities as well. Attracting a post-secondary educational facility would allow some students to stay in the community longer as well as provide life-long learning opportunities. And given the strong component of music and drama talent in our community it may be time to conduct a feasibility study for a centre for performing arts.
About helping local business….
I think there is a lot we can do in terms of developing and supporting programs that will help our local businesses. Caledon residents who work out of town tend to spend a lot of their shopping dollars where they work. Programs to raise awareness and get people shopping where they live are vital to building a strong local economy that will benefit us all. We also need additional street-scaping to beautify the Bolton core.
