Million $$ Neighbourhood Opportunity Picking Up Steam

Bolton resident Leah Dilley has been a Tour de Force in getting the word out and building excitement for Bolton’s chance at being the next town for TV’s Million Dollar Neighbourhood series. If you haven’t seen the show or don’t get what it’s all about you now have the chance to come out and meet the producers and hear about how it works and have your questions answered. MILLION DOLLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD COMING TO BOLTON!!

Hi everyone,

I’m EXTREMELY EXCITED to let everyone know that Bolton is in the final selection process between us and a few other towns to be chosen for the next documentary/reality TV series “MILLION DOLLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD”. This is a new program from the OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network…ie. it’s HUGE!!) check out the trailer here<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCMTj8-m2m4>

The shows goal is to work with 100 families to collectively increase their net worth by $1 million over a 10 week period. (basically each family increases their net worth by $1000/week…a big challenge!) Over 10 weeks they have challenges and bring in financial experts to teach people how to do this and work together as a community to accomplish this. As a financial professional I think that this is an amazing idea and very timely considering the financial condition of the world right now. (I’m hoping to have some clients volunteer to be on the show and to be selected as one of the financial professionals also) By the way, there are also prizes ie. $100,000 for the top family!

The producers randomly selected Bolton and contacted my good friend Leah to “rally the troops” so that there is enough interest to bring the show to town. The challenge is that other towns got wind of this and are trying to win over the producers. Lets help Leah and our community!!

THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR COMMUNITY!!!!
I highly doubt Bolton/Caledon will every get this kind of opportunity again so lets get excited about this, show our support and put Bolton on the map, AND make the producers proud to have chosen Bolton in the first place.

Caledon Trees That Tell a Story

The Heritage Caledon committee is taking the initiative to identify and place into an inclusive database, culturally significant trees located in our community. A heritage tree is a prominent community landmark, a “witness of yesteryear”, associated with historic events, persons or a period in time. While heritage trees are identified by both their size and age; their historical and cultural significance are the most important features. Our heritage trees form part of the true events of our history, our folklore and legends. Whatever the story is, as it relates to a tree they are looking to record it, and include it in Caledon’s history.

A Million Dollar Neighbourhood?

Is Bolton a good choice for the next Million Dollar Neighbourhood Challenge? Bolton resident Leah Dilley thinks so, and to that end Leah is hosting an Open House this week to explain the process. If Force Four Entertainment receives enough expressions of interest from Bolton residents by next week the town could make the short list and receive a visit from Force Four at which they’d explain the finer details and (possibly) become the chosen town for their next season’s show. So use the email below to send them your stories/interest or drop by Leah’s Open House at 85 King Street West, Bolton, on Wed the 16th anytime between 4:00 p.m. amd 8:00 p.m.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (Canada) and Force Four Productions (Cupcake Girls, Urban/Suburban) are searching for an adventurous community to take part in season two of Million Dollar Neighborhood. Could your town be next? Is your family ready to commit to the million-dollar challenge?

HAYville 2012 Program

HAYville, which stands for Harvesting Agricultural Youth, is a Food and Farm Business Incubator program for 12-19 year olds in Caledon and surrounding areas. HAYville aims to foster food and farming enterprise and innovation by empowering youth through hands-on experience in growing, harvesting, cooking, preserving, eating, marketing, selling, business planning and community engagement. Note that HAYville activities are free of charge and some are eligible for Secondary School Community Service Hours.

The HAYville Program is run by the Caledon Countryside Alliance and Eat Local Caledon in partnership with local food and farming facilities – Albion Hills Community Farm, Palgrave Community Kitchen, Inglewood Farmers’ Market and the Caledon Farmers’ Market. The Program is currently funded with a grant from the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation.

The intent of this forum is to present information, policies and documents on the Town of Caledon Aggregate policies in the Official Plan and implementation of these policies; the Source Protection Plan; and the Caledon Creek and Credit River Subwatershed Study (Subwatersheds 16 & 18) in the northwest quadrant in the Town of Caledon.

Representatives from the Town of Caledon, Region of Peel, Toronto Region Conservation Authority and Credit Valley Conservation will be making the presentations.

The Glue That Holds It All Together

I often marvel at the good work done by so many community organizations, even in times when resources, financial and otherwise, are stretched to the max. These organizations are the glue that hold our society together and they rely, in many ways, on the good works of another group…..volunteers.

Those magical words “How can I help?” can start a whole chain of events that lead to a stronger, better, more resilient community.

And so it was, on Monday April 16th, the Town of Caledon recognized the significant contributions of people like Barry Watkins (pictured here with his wife Judy), Richard Hunt, Dorothy Mazeau, Barbara Campbell, Diana Hillman, John Giancola, Barb Swail, Ian Armstrong, Joanne Armstrong, Tim Boughen, Barbara Crocker, Donna Davies, Harvey Rutter, Phillip Armstrong, Bryon Wilson, Beryle Kolb, Andre Sequin – over four dozen in total – long-time, dedicated volunteers who had been nominated by their community.

You make it all work folks, thank you!

Cleaning Up

Spring has sprung in our lovely town but the after-winter litter seems to be everywhere. The blustery winds propel the stuff onto our roadsides and ditches, up against fences and throughout our parks. True to form Tim Hortons is hosting their Annual Community Clean-up this weekend and we hope you’ll consider pitching in. Whether you’re a student seeking volunteer hours, or a caring resident who wants to help beautify our town, you are welcome to kick off the clean-up with us this Saturday morning May 5th at 9:30. Timmys will provide coffee and timbits, as well as bags, gloves and a Timmys’ t-shirt. Then we’ll get our street assignments and head out at 10:00 for a bit of spring cleaning. We’ll end around lunchtime with a BBQ. And there are lots of great prizes too! Our meeting point is the parking lot on the south side of the Wellness Centre, I’ll see you there Saturday morning at 9:30!

You Are What You Eat

As a “junior senior” who wishes to live a long and healthy life the topic of health and fitness, and therefore longevity, has become one of my focuses. Recently, the Peel Medical Officer of Health delegated Caledon Council and during his presentation I learned that 49% of Caledon residents, and 63.5% of Bolton residents, over the age of 18, are either obese or overweight (have a BMI over 25). With an a virtual epidemic of diabetes looming on the horizon I found these statistics alarming.

So I was very intrigued by Bolton resident Melissa Piccinin’s latest educational offering. As a Natural Nutritional Coach and Practitioner Melissa has decided to hold a local (Bolton) Grocery Store Tour that includes guidance on how to read confusing nutritional labels, how navigate recommended dietary restrictions, and how to make the best food choices for you and your family. A great opportunity I’d say! Let her know right away if you want to attend, space is limited to 15.
